CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Brook startled awake, bolting upright and gasping for air.

It took her brain a few moments to settle and her odd adrenaline surge to taper off.

She felt like she was being chased and not just laying chastely in bed with a slumbering prince.

Strangely, he’d found her hand at some point and held it in his atop the pillow in a grip too firm to easily extricate herself from.

It wasn’t that she minded. Not in the slightest bit. Though she did wonder how she’d slept through it. She usually slept so lightly that even the sound of a moth hitting the window could wake her.

Dawn was trying to break. Through the open curtains, she could see teases of the pale light reflected off the waves.

She wondered where they were and how far from the North Carolina coast they’d traveled.

The sailing was smooth, but her brain wouldn’t settle. She couldn’t shake the sensation that something was wrong.

She shook her head.

No, that’s not quite right.

It was more like she was being watched…or observed. But there was no one else there. Just the two of them and Ralph snoring near the doorway.

She didn’t like the quiet. Usually, she counted on it so her mind could detangle the previous day’s hardships. She needed silence and a break from the excessive stimulus constantly fed to people who had too many worries. But the quiet there in that boat atop that ocean had a different and spiritually unmooring quality to it.

Reflexively, it seemed, she squeezed Cooper’s fingers tightly while turning her ear toward the sound of boat motors or whatever was deep beneath them.

“I’ve been watching too many horror films. That’s all,” she whispered even as she moved closer to him and pushed a pillow out of the way.

“Sorry.” Cooper’s groggy voice tugged Brook’s attention away from the foamy gray sea outside of the window. “I tend to grab when I’m asleep. Always have.”

He pulled his hand onto his chest along with the other. His head rolled to the left, and within seconds, his breathing had slowed into the cadence of sleep.

“I didn’t ask for an apology.”

His eyes reopened slowly. “Hmm?”

“I didn’t ask for an apology.”

“What’s wrong? You look pained.” He stretched his long limbs to their full length, disturbing the covers tucked into the bottom of the mattress and creating a draft.

She pulled her legs beneath her and moved more into the divide between them.

“Where’d the pillow go?” he asked.

“It’s on the floor. Your boat makes noises.”

His eyebrows drifted upward as he draped one large hand over her bedspread-covered knee. “What? What kind of noises? Like explodey noises? Paid too much fucking money for there to be explodey noises so soon.”

“Just…noises. Maybe it’s the metal settling. Or maybe they’re normal boat noises. I’ve never been inside a boat like this.”

“Oh. Gotta get you some earplugs, sweetheart.”

“Maybe.” But she didn’t think so.

She didn’t think earplugs would be enough. Even if she couldn’t hear the disturbing noises, she could sense the distracting feedback that had jarred her from sleep.
